McSorey's Old Alehouse - New York City

I'm sorry, review of an American pub? What's this all about?
Well I would have said the same, but bear with me - this isn't just any American pub. McSorey's is actually the oldest pub in New York City. Technically it's probably wrong to call it a pub as it lists itself as an Alehouse and so it more like a bar but without the polished steel furniture and shite music.
Immediately you are greeted by the smell of deep tanned woods and mellowed creamy brown lighting that softly reflects of the hundreds upon hundreds of glass picture pictures of various Irish Americans (the F Kennedys John and Robert feature heavily).
One other thing is that is really unique about this place is that there's sawdust on the floor. It's rather odd I must admit and I only wished that I'd asked what the story was all about, but as this is an old school watering hole, it was probably traditionally there to absorb all of the spilt beer and blood from the fighting Irish working class.
The place was busy for a Thursday evening, with many an American treating themselves to a Friday eve tipple. It meant that tables were rather scarce and we ended up sharing with Brad - a charming guy who was only more than happy to tell us the history of the bar. They even have a pair of Harry Houdini's handcuffs behind the counter!
Personally, what I really liked the most about this place is that they only serve two drinks, light and dark. It's a proper salutation to the old days and ultimately ensures that the only people who drink here are those who like to celebrate what a bar is all about. Not to mention that we men hate trying to make decisions, so only have 2 to choose from helps us all the more.
If you're lucky enough to find yourself in the neighbourhood and pay a visit, you might come across an Irish American waiter with slicked back grey hair and rolled up shirt exposing his powerful forearms. This guy will blast you if you try to order from the bar, so trust me on this one and just sit down and he'll come to you! Don't expect any change though, he'll assume it's all tips. I wouldn't ask for change though, knowing him.
